Their base may be freaking out but Senate Democrats are turning down the heat and my guess is internal polling must be awful.
Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), said the idea that Democrats are planning on ending the filibuster and pack the courts is “a heck of an assumption.”
Even though for the past three days that’s all we’ve heard.
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CAL) is now claiming she would never support ending the filibuster.
“I don’t believe in doing that. I think the filibuster serves a purpose. It is not often used. It’s often less used now than when I first came. And I think it’s part of the Senate that differentiates itself.”
I don’t believe that for a second. Even before the RBG passed away Schumer and a group of Democrat Senators was already planning to do that.
So why the change?
If I had to guess it’s because internal polling cam back and it showed they’ll get destroyed in November if they keep up the rhetoric. It could also have to do with a poll that came out the same weekend RBG died.
The Washington Examiner reported on a Marquette University poll that found if there was a vacancy on the court before the election Americans wanted the seat filled.
Marquette University released the survey results on Saturday that showed 67% of adults believed the Senate should hold a hearing if a vacancy occurred during 2020’s race, with only 32% opposition — and similar strong numbers across Republicans, Democrats, and independents, who supported holding confirmation hearings at 68-31%, 63-37%, and 71-28% respectively. The poll was completed three days before the death of Ginsburg, the 87-year-old liberal icon who was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1993. Ginsburg earned praise from Democrats and Republicans upon news of her death.
The Democrats are between a rock and a hard place. Their base is freaking out and want President Trump impeached every single day until the election.
Even Pelosi is backing off, which tells you they got some data and it wasn’t good.
During an interview with New York Times reporter Kara Swisher Pelosi was pressed to stop President Trump:
Swisher: All right, but I’m going to press you one more time. What is your power to do this? I get the election, but you can get up more. You can speak out more. You can do more impeachments, things like that. Do you have enough power?
Pelosi: Well, we can impeach him every day of the week for anything he does. In fact, for —
Swisher: Why not?
Nancy Pelosi: — 200,000 people dying. Well, because look, the American people want to know what we’re doing that affects them directly.
Exactly, “why not” Pelosi?
Pelosi knows that if they keep up the harsh threats the American people will turn on them. Americans are fed up with the threats and the violence coming from the left.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said during an appearance on Fox News:
“I don’t think the American people like to be threatened,” he said. “I mean, Jerry Nadler said, if you move forward with this — with this nomination and the Senate is won by the Democrats in the election, that they’re going to pack the court. They’re going to add six new seats to the court and take it from nine to 15.”
“Pelosi says today she’s going to go with impeachment if they move forward,” Jordan continued. “I don’t think the American people like being threatened. I think they like the President of the United States following the law and putting someone on that court who’s going to respect the Constitution.”
Something got the Democrat’s attention because they just slammed on the brakes.
