AOC Claims Some Tipped Work Is “Indentured Servitude”

The Federal Minimums vary from state to state, and some jobs pay more than the minimum.

Restaurant workers pay varies greatly, depending on if it is a tipped position or not. Waiter’s hourly wage is set so they make at least minimum wage in an hour. In most restaurants, you will make at least $5-$10 an hour in tips and much more than that during lunch and dinner.

If you don’t then you are a bad server, or the place is on the way out and you should seek other employment. But AOC would have you believe, that the wait staff is taking home a measly two dollars an hour.

She as much while trying to push for a higher minimum wage.

“We talk about the need for a fair wage. It is so real the amount of exploitation, and harassment, and labor violations that you will endure for the sake and structure of tipped work. In the Federal Tipped Minimum Wage is $2.13 and hour. That is unacceptable. Any job that pays 2 dollars and thirteen cents an hour is not a job. It’s indentured servitude.”

New York is one of 43 states where two minimum wages are allowed to be set. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, though many states have higher rates. Connecticut, for example, passed a bill this week that will lift its hourly minimum wage to $15 by 2023.

The freshman lawmaker has been vocal about her past working as a bartender in New York City. She unseated 10-term congressman Rep. Joe Crowley last year in the Democratic primary. The restaurant where she worked is called Flats Fix, a taco and tequila bar. Ocasio-Cortez famously said that she couldn’t afford an apartment in Washington, D.C., after she was elected.”

New York is expensive. Many people commute there because of how high the prices are in the city.

The primary thing AOC is forgetting is that no one is forcing anyone to work at a place that pays two dollars an hour, as that wage does not include tips. If it did, no one would work there.

But AOC with her demands to raise the minimum is going to kill Mom and Pop shops. In fact, all she is really doing is helping out corporations with a stance like this. Do you know who pays $15 an hour? Amazon. Which makes you think why did she say no to them again?
