NY County Clerk Tells Gov. Cuomo Where To Stick It: License For Illegals On Hold

Governor Cuomo has passed The Green Light Bill that will make it so illegals can obtain Driver’s licenses in New York. County Clerks from both sides of the aisle are against this and are working to fight it.

Erie Country Clerk Michael Kearns is leading the charge against this irrational law.

I will not be granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants,” Kearns vowed. “As the duly elected Clerk of the County of Erie, I took an oath whereby I solemnly swore to ‘support’ the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of New York, and I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Erie County Clerk according to the best of my ability.’”

As it stands now, the law is scheduled to take effect in December. Kearns is hoping to get it thrown out before then. If it does go into effect, however, he vowed not to follow it.

When asked if he is prepared to be thrown of out office by Governor Cuomo over the law, Kearns said, “He has the power. However through my research, working through my legal team, we have to be charged. There has to be some charges, and I get to answer those charges. It’s almost one of those things we’re preparing for. I hope it doesn’t happen.”

Jennifer Connor, an organizer for the Green Light Campaign, which supported the bill, estimates of the 900,000 undocumented people in New York State, about 200,000 of them will apply for a license. She says she will fight in order to allow them to do so.

“We will come after you if you don’t uphold the law because of racism and xenophobia,” she said.”

This is not racism or xenophobia, this is common sense. We should not be giving out American IDs to illegals. These are not people who are here legally. We should all be supporting this clerk who stands to lose his job for following our laws. Good on him.
